About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Materials and Inventory Planner to lead materials planning and inventory control for a railcar maintenance and repair facility. This position plays a critical role in ensuring timely availability of parts and components to support efficient maintenance operations while minimizing excess inventory and controlling costs.
Job Description
As the Materials and Inventory Planner, you will:
- Develop and maintain accurate inventory plans for railcar parts, components, consumables, and tools based on maintenance schedules and historical usage.
- Monitor stock levels, track usage trends, and identify slow-moving or obsolete materials to optimize storage and reduce waste.
- Collaborate with purchasing teams and vendors to ensure timely delivery of parts and materials while maintaining cost-effectiveness.
- Partner with shop supervisors, planners, and mechanics to anticipate material needs and prevent downtime due to shortages or delays.
- Prepare regular reports on inventory accuracy, turnover, and KPIs for management review.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Logistics, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
- 3–5+ years of experience in inventory planning, warehouse operations, or supply chain roles.
- Experience with ERP or maintenance management systems.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Proven leadership and communication abilities.
- Knowledge of inventory management best practices and safety standards.
- Prior experience in industrial, railcar, or heavy equipment maintenance environments.
- General mechanical knowledge and familiarity with shop tools and equipment.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout shop and yard areas for extended periods.
- Occasionally lift and carry materials or equipment up to 50 lbs.
- Must bend, stoop, reach, and climb stairs or ladders as needed.
- Requires use of PPE such as safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, and safety-toe work boots.
- Work in warehouse, active railcar repair shop, and outdoor yard areas with exposure to varying weather conditions and industrial noise.
