Our firm is partnering with a well-established, Midwest-based financial institution that specializes in serving agricultural borrowers and agribusinesses. We are seeking an experienced Agriculture Underwriter to support a diverse portfolio of farm, ranch, and agribusiness clients by evaluating risk, analyzing financial performance, and supporting sound credit and underwriting decisions.
This role is responsible for underwriting and analyzing agricultural risks and credits, with a strong emphasis on financial analysis, risk assessment, and collaboration with lenders and relationship managers. The Agriculture Underwriter plays a critical role in ensuring portfolio quality, regulatory compliance, and sustainable profitability within the agricultural sector.

Job Description
The Agriculture Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and managing agricultural risk across a portfolio of farm, ranch, and agribusiness clients. This role works closely with lenders, relationship managers, and internal stakeholders to analyze financial performance, assess risk exposure, and support sound underwriting and credit decisions while ensuring compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Evaluate agricultural underwriting submissions, including farm, ranch, and agribusiness risks
  • Analyze financial statements, tax returns, production data, cash flow, and loss history
  • Complete financial spreads using Sageworks, Excel, and other financial analysis tools
  • Assess primary repayment sources, typically cash flow, for viability and sustainability
  • Evaluate secondary repayment sources, including collateral and guarantors
  • Compare borrower financial performance to industry benchmarks and internal policy guidelines
  • Accurately assess risk and assign appropriate risk ratings
  • Price and structure underwriting decisions to balance profitability and customer needs
  • Prepare credit action presentations and support the underwriting approval process
  • Partner proactively with lenders and borrowers to clarify issues and obtain additional information
  • Participate in joint lender or customer calls as requested
  • Apply underwriting authority to approve, modify, or decline submissions
  • Support renewals, policy modifications, and ongoing portfolio monitoring
  • Monitor portfolio trends and identify emerging agricultural, market, or weather-related risks
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and adherence to underwriting and credit standards
  • Maintain accurate underwriting files, documentation, and ongoing credit administration
  • Review covenant compliance and assist with routine credit administration activities
  • Provide underwriting guidance and risk management recommendations

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Agricultural Business, Economics, or a related field
  • Experience performing financial analysis, underwriting, or credit analysis within agriculture or commercial lending
  • Strong understanding of agricultural operations, cash flow, and collateral structures
  • Ability to analyze complex financial data and present recommendations clearly
  • Proficiency with financial analysis tools and spreadsheet software
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation standards
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 6+ years of progressively responsible agricultural credit or underwriting experience (senior-level consideration)
  • Experience supporting agricultural lenders or agribusiness portfolios
  • Ongoing professional development or advanced training in credit, underwriting, or risk management
