About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to join a well-established union contractor in the construction industry. This is a hands-on role overseeing all accounting functions for two entities with approximately 25 employees. The position requires someone who can manage day-to-day accounting while maintaining a strategic view of the business. The company operates seasonally and values a collaborative, blue-collar team environment. You will be the sole accounting professional, supported by AP/AR staff, and will handle in-house weekly payroll. Occasional HR responsibilities may be involved.
Job Description
As the Accounting Manager, you will participate in executive-level decisions and manage all financial operations, including payroll, budgeting, and reporting. Key responsibilities include:
- Participate in key decisions as part of the executive management team.
- Oversee accounting and human resources functions.
- Monitor and implement financial goals and budgeting processes.
- Supervise cash management activities and prepare monthly financial statements.
- Manage accounts receivable/payable and transaction processing systems.
- Oversee weekly payroll for all employees and union reporting requirements.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and maintain accurate accounting records.
- Develop and monitor policies and procedures for financial integrity.
- Maintain relationships with banks, auditors, insurance brokers, unions, and other third parties.
- Handle quarterly and annual tax reporting (payroll and sales tax).
- Manage insurance audits and renewals.
- Prepare WIP schedules and monthly journal entries.
- Oversee credit card maintenance and reporting.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Minimum 5 years of accounting experience
- Construction industry experience is required
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting.
- Experience with union payroll and certified payroll reporting.
- Proficiency in Sage 100 or similar accounting software.
- Ability to manage all aspects of accounting independently.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Comfortable working in a blue-collar, team-oriented environment.
- Experience with Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules.
- Familiarity with Procore or other project management software.
- Prior experience in a seasonal business environment.
- Exposure to HR functions and benefits administration.
