About the Role
Our firm is partnering with a well-established organization in the affordable housing and property management industry to identify a detail-oriented Compliance Specialist. This role supports a portfolio of multifamily properties with layered affordability programs and plays a critical part in ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local housing regulations. The Compliance Specialist works collaboratively with compliance leadership and operational teams to support residents, maintain regulatory standards, and ensure smooth property operations.
Job Description
The Compliance Specialist is responsible for managing compliance-related activities across assigned properties within a defined region. This includes maintaining affordability compliance throughout residents’ tenancy, processing certifications, and supporting audits and reporting. Key responsibilities include:
- Ensure ongoing compliance with affordability requirements during resident tenancy
- Process annual recertifications, including direct communication with residents regarding program requirements
- Complete initial, interim, and termination certifications, as applicable
- Generate recertification notices in compliance with HUD and/or IRS notification requirements
- Process renewal documentation, including Section 8 voucher renewals when applicable
- Prepare vacancy claims and repayment agreements for Compliance Manager review and approval
- Schedule annual unit inspections in coordination with the maintenance team
- Monitor occupancy standards and house rules and coordinate with other departments as needed
- Enter HAP and/or Section 8 voucher payments
- Provide backup support for other members of the Compliance team
- Assist with on-site file audits and management reviews
- Support the Compliance Manager with monthly and annual compliance reporting
- Participate in quarterly and annual trainings to maintain regulatory knowledge
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local Fair Housing regulations
- Contribute to a collaborative, positive, and professional team environment
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 3+ years of property management compliance experience, including affordable housing programs
- Working knowledge of subsidy programs and Fair Housing regulations
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Customer-focused mindset with the ability to work effectively with residents and internal teams
- Ability to learn, adapt to, and effectively use technology platforms
- Industry certifications such as:
- Tax Credit Specialist
- Blended Occupancy Specialist
- Assisted Housing Manager
- Certified Occupancy Specialist
- Experience with HUD project-based affordable housing
- Experience using Yardi property management software
