About the Role
Our client, a long-established organization in the commercial insurance industry, is seeking an experienced Java Systems Developer to support and enhance critical enterprise applications. This in-person position is based in Owatonna, MN, and plays a key role on a collaborative support-and-enhancement team focused on improving system reliability, streamlining business processes, and delivering high-quality technical solutions. This role requires strong technical aptitude, the ability to learn new technologies quickly, and a commitment to ownership, teamwork, and clear communication. Due to the collaborative nature of this work, remote or hybrid arrangements are not available.

Job Description
In this role, you will support and enhance core enterprise systems by analyzing issues, implementing solutions, designing improvements, and collaborating closely with technical and business teams. You will work within a highly integrated environment using technologies such as Java with Spring, OutSystems, SQL Server, and Tableau to improve system performance, reliability, and business efficiency.


Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze system behavior and identify root causes of issues across multiple integrated systems.
  • Collaborate with technical teams to resolve issues and drive long-term, sustainable solutions.
  • Monitor patterns in support issues and recommend preventative measures.
  • Educate and empower stakeholders and Help Desk teams to resolve common issues more quickly.
  • Design and implement configuration changes and integrations aligned with coding and architectural standards.
  • Contribute to technical design discussions and document solution approaches, including impacts on upstream and downstream systems.
  • Identify opportunities for support automation and process improvements.
  • Develop test scenarios and test cases; perform unit, system, regression, and acceptance testing.
  • Create, maintain, and interpret automated test results.
  • Partner with product owners, SMEs, QA teams, and other IS groups to share progress updates, risks, and decisions.
  • Collaborate with business partners to strategize resolution plans and set expectations for timing and outcomes.


Qualifications
Required  
  • 5+ years of professional development experience.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex, integrated systems and relational databases (SQL Server).
  • Proficiency in Java with Spring or strong experience in a comparable object-oriented language; OutSystems experience is a plus and training is available.
  • Familiarity with REST APIs, messaging and integration patterns, and diagnosing application and server logs.
  • Familiarity with Git and Azure DevOps (or similar) for version control and work management.
  • Strong sense of ownership, accountability, and follow-through.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical partners.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to confidently challenge ideas and propose alternatives.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with high transparency and team-based accountability.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent work experience.
Preferred
  • Experience with OutSystems.
  • Knowledge of the insurance industry.
