About the Role
We are partnering with a leading organization in the financial protection and insurance industry to identify a highly skilled Medical Director. This position supports life and health risk assessment, claims management, and product development. The ideal candidate will apply advanced clinical expertise to guide underwriting practices, inform strategic decision-making, and contribute to medical guideline development across the organization.
This is a contract role with the potential to convert to a part-time, contract-to-hire position, depending on performance and business needs. The position is fully remote. Candidates open to conversion must reside in a U.S. state eligible for employment by the client.
Job Description
As the Medical Director, you will serve as a key medical expert supporting underwriting, claims, and product development functions. You will evaluate medical information, establish underwriting guidelines, and translate emerging medical research into actionable insights. This role requires strong leadership and the ability to communicate complex medical topics in an accessible and scalable format.
Key Responsibilities:
- Identify and interpret medical information relevant to claims evaluation and underwriting review.
- Develop and deliver advanced medical training programs for underwriters and claims examiners.
- Establish and maintain medical underwriting guidelines aligned with product strategy and risk appetite.
- Provide expert consultation on medical risk and offer thought leadership on best-practice decision-making.
- Stay current with medical research and evaluate its relevance for life and health risk assessment.
- Identify emerging medical topics, advances, and risks; communicate timely updates to stakeholders.
- Contribute to strategic initiatives, risk mitigation efforts, and fair risk assessment practices.
- Represent the organization within the insurance medicine community and advance industry thought leadership.
- Oversee, mentor, and support the development of a team of medical professionals.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- MD or DO from an accredited medical school.
- 5+ years of clinical experience in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine.
- Strong, up-to-date knowledge of medical literature and clinical guidelines.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for both formal and informal settings.
- Active U.S. medical license (MD or DO).
- 5+ years of experience in insurance medicine.
- Board Certified in Insurance Medicine (DBIM).
- Recognized expertise or leadership in the life insurance or medical community (e.g., publications, presentations, professional involvement).
