About the Role
Our firm is partnering with a large, nationally recognized professional services organization operating across all 50 states to identify a skilled Payroll Specialist. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity supporting a high-volume, multi-state payroll environment. The role offers a hybrid schedule with collaboration alongside an experienced payroll team based in San Diego, CA.
This position is ideal for a payroll professional who thrives in fast-paced environments, values accuracy and compliance, and enjoys supporting employees across a nationwide organization.
Job Description
The Payroll Specialist will be responsible for preparing and processing biweekly payroll for up to 1,500 employees, while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This role also supports timekeeping administration, employee record maintenance, and payroll-related inquiries.
Key Responsibilities
- Process and audit biweekly payroll in a multi-state environment
- Review and audit timekeeping records to ensure accuracy and compliance
- Maintain employee payroll files with a high level of accuracy
- Post changes related to tax status, deductions, and payroll updates
- Process terminations, manual checks, and involuntary deductions (e.g., garnishments)
- Allocate payroll expenses to the general ledger
- Respond to employee payroll and timekeeping inquiries
- Verify employment and perform related administrative tasks
- Support the payroll and timekeeping systems as needed
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 2+ years of payroll experience, including multi-state payroll
- Experience processing payroll for high-volume employee populations
- Strong understanding of payroll compliance and timekeeping systems
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Experience using general office equipment, including 10-key by touch
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong customer service, organizational, and time-management skills
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
- Experience supporting payroll across all 50 states
- Exposure to general ledger allocations and accounting coordination
- Prior experience in a professional services or corporate environment
