About the Role
Our client, a global manufacturer of electrical connection, protection, and thermal management solutions, is seeking a Senior R&D Design Engineer, Mechanical to join their engineering team in Anoka, Minnesota. This role focuses on the development of innovative cooling and thermal management technologies that support critical infrastructure and industrial applications.
The ideal candidate will bring strong mechanical engineering expertise, a passion for innovation, and experience designing complex systems from concept through production. This position offers the opportunity to collaborate with cross-functional teams, contribute to new product development initiatives, and help deliver high-performance solutions to customers worldwide.
Job Description
As a Senior R&D Design Engineer, Mechanical, you will play a key role in the design, testing, validation, and launch of advanced cooling and thermal management products. You will apply specialized engineering knowledge to develop innovative solutions while ensuring compliance with industry standards, customer requirements, and manufacturing objectives.
Responsibilities
  • Apply specialized engineering expertise in areas such as:
    • Heat transfer
    • Hydraulic network design
    • Sheet metal design
    • Weldment design
    • Thermal management systems
  • Perform engineering analyses and simulations to validate product performance, including:
    • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
    • Flow network modeling
    • Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
    • Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • Design systems and components that comply with ASME standards for piping and pressure vessels.
  • Research and incorporate advancements in heat exchangers, pumps, fans, and other critical cooling system components.
  • Develop test specifications and validation protocols while coordinating testing activities and reviewing test results for accuracy and completeness.
  • Partner with designers and engineering teams to ensure products:
    • Meet customer specifications
    • Incorporate standard processes
    • Are optimized for manufacturability
  • Collaborate with project management, manufacturing, operations, and quality teams to simplify designs, improve production efficiency, and support successful project execution.
  • Define purchased component requirements and support sourcing activities with supply chain teams.
  • Lead product development efforts from market requirements and concept development through prototyping, testing, and production launch.
  • Support customer engagement efforts alongside Sales and Marketing teams and contribute to technical relationships with industry partners.
  • Lead prototype development activities and provide hands-on engineering support when necessary.
  • Coordinate regulatory and third-party testing activities.
  • Collaborate with external vendors and technology partners to advance new product designs and capabilities.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing risk, improving collaboration, and accelerating product development cycles.
  • Travel domestically up to 10% as needed.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Hydronic and water pumping systems
    • Heat transfer principles
    • Fluid flow applications for cooling and heating systems
  • Experience designing components and assemblies using SolidWorks or a similar 3D CAD platform.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and translate customer requirements and industry specifications into engineering designs.
  • Experience using engineering design and reliability tools such as:
    • DFMEA
    • DFM
    • RCCM
  • Experience working with cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to travel domestically up to 10%.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel (BPV) Code design and applications.
  • Knowledge of AWS, ISO, and ASME Section IX standards or certifications.
  • Experience reading electrical schematics and selecting electrical components.
  • Machine design experience.
  • Experience with New Product Introduction (NPI) Stage-Gate processes.
  • Experience working with ERP systems.
  • Background in thermal management, cooling systems, or data center infrastructure products.
  • Experience working with external testing laboratories, certification bodies, or regulatory agencies.
