About the Role
Our client, a growing civil engineering and land surveying firm serving public and private infrastructure projects in the Upper Midwest, is seeking an experienced Survey Crew Chief to support and expand surveying services in the region. This role leads field survey crews and plays a key part in delivering accurate, high?quality survey data for transportation, roadway, and urban development projects. The position reports to the Survey Department Manager and offers long?term growth potential within the organization.
Job Description
The Survey Crew Chief is responsible for leading field operations and ensuring survey work is completed safely, accurately, and in accordance with professional and regulatory standards.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Lead and supervise survey crews performing topographic, boundary, construction, right of way, easement, subdivision plat, and control surveys
  • Collect field data using conventional surveying methods, GPS, robotic, and total station equipment
  • Research and review record information including plats, plans, deeds, easements, and right of way documents
  • Prepare accurate field notes, sketches, and documentation of existing and changing field conditions
  • Write, review, or assist with legal descriptions, subdivision plats, and records of survey, as applicable
  • Coordinate and participate in pre survey planning meetings and provide ongoing project updates
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, engineers, and project owner representatives in the field
  • Perform physical field tasks as needed, including staking, clearing vegetation, and manual labor
  • Follow state, local, and agency surveying standards and safety requirements
  • Support professional development and participate in industry or community organizations
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Required
  • Proficiency with GPS, robotic, and total station survey equipment
  • Experience performing construction, topographic, and boundary surveys
  • Strong understanding of surveying methods, field procedures, and data collection standards
  • Ability to perform complex surveying calculations using coordinate geometry software and field technology
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and ability to lead field staff
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and near active construction or traffic areas
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 to 75 pounds
  • Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one
  • Willingness to travel and work extended or overtime hours during peak construction seasons
Preferred
  • LSIT or Professional Land Surveyor license in North Dakota or Minnesota, or ability to obtain licensure within 12 months
  • Five or more years of highway, roadway, or construction staking experience
  • Familiarity with NDDOT or MnDOT survey and construction methods
  • Experience preparing or reviewing legal descriptions, right of way documents, and subdivision plats
  • Interest in career advancement into senior or project leadership roles, including budget and financial responsibility
