About the Role
Our client, a well established civil engineering consulting firm specializing in transportation infrastructure, is seeking a Transportation Design Engineer to join their growing transportation team. This role offers flexible work location options, including hybrid arrangements from multiple regional offices. The ideal candidate will support highway and urban roadway projects from planning through design and construction, collaborating closely with multidisciplinary project teams.
Job Description
The Transportation Design Engineer will contribute to the successful delivery of transportation projects by supporting design development, coordination, and construction activities. This role offers opportunities for increasing responsibility, including project management and client interaction, based on experience.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Supporting planning, design, specifications, plans, reports, construction observation, and project management for transportation projects
  • Collaborating with project managers, senior engineers, and project teams throughout all phases of project delivery
  • Delegating and coordinating work with CADD technicians, graduate engineers, and field staff
  • Preparing design documents using CADD and roadway modeling software in accordance with company and client standards
  • Communicating project status, progress, and technical information to project leadership
  • Participating in client meetings, project meetings, and public involvement activities as needed
  • Assisting with proposal development and participating in interviews for new work pursuits
  • Serving as a project engineer or on site representative during construction, as assigned
  • Supporting business development efforts, with expanded responsibility over time
  • Traveling to project sites and working extended hours during peak construction periods, as required
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering
  • Ability to obtain Professional Engineer licensure in Minnesota or North Dakota within 6 to 12 months
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Detail oriented, self motivated, and capable of working independently and collaboratively
  • Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one
  • Ability to work both in an office environment and outdoors during construction season
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform field related activities as required
Preferred
  • Professional Engineer license in Minnesota or North Dakota
  • Five or more years of highway or roadway design experience
  • Familiarity with Minnesota DOT or North Dakota DOT design standards and project development processes
  • Proficiency with Bentley OpenRoads Designer and MicroStation Connect, including corridor modeling
  • Experience with AutoCAD or Civil 3D
  • Experience with municipal or urban roadway projects, including underground utilities
  • Interest in long term growth toward project management and client management roles
